It is no secret that I love reading to my children and am a bit of a book hog. Both of my boys also love reading books to themselves. I enjoy the quality time spent cuddling up with them and reading a book. But did you know I love signing with them as well? We’ve been huge fans of the show Signing Time and both my boys can sign. Lucian (my almost three year old) can sign a couple dozen words and recognizes so many more. Warren (my 16 month old) knows about a dozen signs like all done, milk, cracker, bird, sleep, sad, baby, go, stop. It helps reinforce what I am trying to communicate when I also sign it at the same time. They seem to appreciate another way to tell me what they are thinking or what they want. It is so exciting the first time your child signs. It opens up a whole new world of language with your child!
Naturally when I was asked to review the new book, Baby Signs I jumped at the opportunity to combine two of my favorite things, signing and books. Amazingly we didn’t have a book that incorporated signs yet and I love another outlet besides videos in which to learn new signs.
This book is probably the most complex and spectacular book I’ve ever seen. The intricate pop ups are stunning. The detail is AMAZING!!! What more can I say? Just look at these photos to give you an idea of what I mean.
Lucian loved being able to make the action of the sign with the pull tabs and Warren loved the pop ups. The only downside I can see with this book is its fragility. My youngest loves pulling books off our bookshelf and reading them by himself. This can not be one of those books. I currently have it hidden to avoid it getting unintentionally damaged. I also have to pay attention when I’m reading it that my son doesn’t try to rip the poor boy’s head off. That being said, I think this book is totally worth it!
Synopsis: BABY SIGNS is based on American Sign Language and will help encourage the use of non-verbal gestures to communicate. Research has proven that babies who are taught to use signs to express their basic ideas before they can say words are happier because they can communicate with others.

We have a very close friend who is almost completely deaf and we use signing to communicate frequently. It is definitely a art of our lives and will therefore be a part of our son's life, I am looking forward to teaching him,

They love having the skill and have used it far more often in their lives than they ever thought that they would. I would love for them to teach my three kids, so that they, too, could someday help a deaf person feel less alone in this hearing world.

We have been using signing with DS since day one. He started using the milk sign around 4 months and hasn't really picked up any other signs yet. He will be 11 months next week and has started pointing and waving now. He also has a fist up in the air greeting when he sees you. It at least has helped us know when he is hungry and I have a feeling he will really take off on his signing after a year. Thanks! thebubbledies(at)gmail(dot)com

i would like to teach him some signs because i don't quite understand him so it's difficult to communicate
I started learning ASL when I was in school, signing songs for school talent shows. Although I never became really good at it I could communicate a little at the deaf Mass my mom and I went to once a month.
I learned the value of knowing some ASL when I was representing my gymnastics studio at an event. We had a table and a gentleman walked up to it and started looking at the brochures. I started to ask him if his children were interested when he gestured that he was deaf.
The look on his face when I started to sign to him was amazing. He was surprised, pleased and touched, all at the same time. It made me feel so good! I love that I was able to communicate with him.
It's such a valuable communication method, for adults and children alike!

I took American Sign language in college (quite a few years ago), and there is no doubt about how important it can be! Children OBVIOUSLY understand language before they can actually speak it. Just tell a 15 month old to go get the ball and they will, but they can't yet tell you to go get it yourself! I'd love have a refresher on the basics!
I would love to teach my son the sign for "thirsty" or "drink".

Baby signs saved both my daughter and I from language barrier frustration!!
think it's a great idea for any youngster to learn or get the basics of another language, wish i did – regnod(at)yahoo(d0t)com
With my wife and mother-in-law both being pediatric speech pathologists, teaching children how to communicate as soon as possible is something that's very important in our family.
Thanks!

What I love about signing is that you don't have to make noise to communicate. (Sometimes my dh and I will sign to each other behind our children's backs.)

I think teaching a young child to sign is wonderful! You can actually communicate with them and learn what they want without all the tears!
I think it would ease communication during a time when children are easily frustrated.

What I love about Baby Signing, is that it relieves some of the child's frustration at not being able to communicate. macd82 at gmail dot com
I would be able to talk to my kid and see what he wants.

My sister taught my niece to sign when she was a baby. It was so neat! Sometimes you are in situations, like church or the library or places where you should be quiet and having an alternative way to communicate is very nice. My friend has a newborn and I think she would very much enjoy teaching her son to sign.
I love signing because it bridges communication barriers. I would love for my baby to hav that ability.
I love that baby signing gives you an earlier window into communicating with your baby, tha way he can tell you what he needs sooner!

Having them learn at this age makes it easier to learn the 'language' per se as they are learning their own native language. What a wonderful idea, thanks for the giveaway!

We're going to learn signing so that baby can communicate with us. We want our baby to be able to let us know if something is wrong, or if she likes a specific food and wants more!
Would love to teach my best friend's baby to sign because I was taught when I was a baby!

My daughter is hard of hearing and signing was a huge bridge to speaking for her. I also do a sign language playgroup for kids of all ages but mostly geared towards toddlers and preschoolers.
Who would want to know a second language?
I'd like for him to learn because there are a lot of times that I dont know what he wants. Thanks for the chance!

Children pick up on everything so much easier when they're very small like that. I actually think knowing sign language is something we should all know and starting young is the best time.

I've studied ASL before and think that it's a fantastic concept to teach to babies, especially since speech disorders tend to run in my husband's family.
