Chocolate milk is always a special treat for my two boys. My husband and I were aghast however when a couple of weeks ago we looked at ingredients label and found high fructose corn syrup as an ingredient on our chocolate milk! While we expect to find it in soda and other sugary drinks we did not expect it in any kind of milk, not even chocolate. We’ve been trying to limit the amount of HFCS in our diets after becoming more educated about the horrible effects it has on our bodies. We have been getting discouraged to find some of our favorites contain high amounts of HFCS. Why do we always love the taste of what is horrible for us?
Only a few days later I was contacted to try out Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3. (Isn’t that a mouthful?) Before accepting it the first thing I did was visit the Horizon website to find out EXACTLY what was in this chocolate milk. I was pleasantly surprised.
Ingredients: Organic Grade A Lowfat Milk, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa, Organic Vanilla Flavor, DHA Algal Oil, Carrageenan, Salt, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D3.
I’m no expert but organic milk mixed with organic evaporated cane juice along with organic cocoa sounds like the most natural kind of chocolate milk I can buy. It also contains DHA Omega-3 which is an important nutrient that helps support heart, brain and eye health. Milk mixed with chocolate and some important nutrients thrown in for good measure. Does it get any better than that?
None of this matters of course if it doesn’t taste good. My family of four tried this for the first time earlier tonight and I can tell you it was different than what we were used to but in a very good way.
It is hard to describe exactly but the taste was just a bit lighter and yet still very sweet, almost like I was drinking a cold gourmet hot cocoa. I’m sure it will be fabulous warmed up on a cold day. It has a nice and creamy thickness and is a lot lighter brown than our typical chocolate milk. All of us loved it, truly. Both my boys kept asking for more and my two year old finally threw down his straw in protest when I denied him more after the third time he asked. I promised him some more tomorrow so don’t feel too bad for him.

I would like to try this because I like chocolate milk but sometimes think the store bought type is too thick. This sounds good because it is lighter.
