Wordless Wednesday – The Shrew

Last week I found this little guy blindly roaming around our backyard. He just kept going and going until my kiddos discovered what I was so interested in and then he immediately went into camouflage mode. It was quite impressive actually. I don’t think he moved for 5 minutes until I told the boys to stop scaring the poor thing by being all giddy and talking with such enthusiasm. (Should we try to tame him? Ha!)

  2. 2

I’m with Jennifer. And I think I’d be freaked out if I saw that – or kind of saw that hiding in my back yard!

  3. 3

kids always do that, huh? we had a gorgeous cardinal outside our window the other day and I really wnated to get a pic – but as soon as my daughter saw it she screams “wow mommy – that bird is so pretty!” – and off the bird flew!!!! Haha!
    Happy WW!

I’d have kept him as a pet, he’s kinda cute. Of course, maybe if you cut your grass he’d go find a new home. ;-P

I don’t know what a shrew is either. Usually all we find in our backyard are snakeskins. Blech.

When I saw the title, I expected to find a picture of some evil person that you were seeking cyber revenge on. This little guy was so much cuter!

  10. 10

So neat! Is that the same thing as a mole?

Never seen one, but he looks kind of cute! I could see my daughter reacting in the same way your boys did…she loves the animals outside and often, accidentally, scares them away with her screeching. :)

    Happy WW!

Those are cool and fine and dandy until they get in your bed. No joke, when I was still pregnant with Isaac (so almost a year ago?), I had a shrew crawl over me while I was sleeping…my husband thought I was nuts jumping out of bed…then it crawled on him. *shiver* gross

    Melinda says:

ewwww. I always see them in the zoo, they’re always running around the bottom of the lemur and tamarin cages.

Oh the signs of Spring!!! Now, just to let you know, I have a secret that Proctor & Gamble has shared with me & I’m not letting the cat out of the bag until tomorrow! It’s so cool I can’t wait to tell everyone! I’ve seen it & I’m so excited! If you’d like to learn more just visit my blog at http://thenewxmasdolly@blogspot.com

What a sweetie. I don’t think we have those here where I live in Utah. We have a lot of deer roaming our yards and we have ducks and Canada geese at the reservoirs I walk by every morning.

    Kel says:

Wow. I’ve never seen a shrew outside of a zoo.

    Lauralee Hensley says:

Cute, but I wouldn’t tame it. Shrews are used to having babies ten times a year. You don’t know if it’s a pregnant shrew or not. Shrews eat about 90 percent of their body weight in foods everyday. They are pretty territorial mammals too and even will fight off other shrews except at mating time. Young shrews have pretty sharp teeth too. I’d let it do what it does best in your yard, eating insects, nuts, and such. Besides they sleep alot in the daytime, so I’d doubt if your kids would get alot of enjoyment out of them, unless they like hamsters and mice and such. Shrews are not part of the mouse lineage though.

    How cute!
