My daughter Danica started getting invited to a lot of birthday parties this past year since she started preschool. I wanted to give her a special birthday party too, but on a limited budget. Since she was turning five this year, and is obsessed with princesses, I decided it would be fun to throw her a princess themed party.
Several years ago, I saw a cake that someone made with a barbie doll in the middle and the cake made up her dress. I was thrilled to find out that Wilton makes a cake specifically for this purpose. The Wilton Wonder Mold Kit ($19.99) worked perfectly for me to create two beautiful princess cakes for Danica’s party.
The kit was very easy to use, as long as you follow the directions that come with it. I used a standard box cake mix and made sure to follow the directions that came with the cake pan, not the mix, as you have to cook it longer using the Wonder Mold pan. The cake baked beautifully, but did not bake all the way up to the pan (approximately 3/4 full). In the future, I think I will either add part of another box of cake mix, or bake a separate 8 or 9 inch round cake to put under it to give it a little more height. I used the Wilton Princess Royal Icing Decorations ($5.99) for the princess tiaras.
We invited 11 girls over for the princess party. My 3-year-old son joined in the fun too, so I decided to make some cupcakes to go with the cake to make sure there was enough to go around. I used the Princess Cupcake Stand Kit ($10.99) to display the cupcakes and it was a big hit with the girls.
One of my favorite things I found on Wilton was the Princess Cupcake Wraps ‘N Picks ($3.49). These adorable little crowns can be wrapped around the cupcakes after they are baked. I think they are so cute and so easy to dress up your cupcakes.
The party was a huge success! We had the girls decorate princess tiaras and magic wands that we found at the local dollar store. The girls all wore their princess dresses to the party and we had them walk around the room and do a princess parade.
I think the girls’ favorite part was that we served juice in little plastic teacups and teapots that I bought. The girls thought it was great to have their little tea party with their cake!
Danica loved her party and I loved giving it to her. It was a fun affordable way to make my daughter princess for a day!
