How I Personalized Our Home with Tips from Rentals.com

If there is one thing that I’ve learned from living in the same house for nine years, my style has changed from when we first moved in. Not only am I almost a decade older but children have been added. This certainly changes how we plan our spaces and what we decide to purchase to decorate our home. Rentals.com has some great resources to help you have a home fit your family’s style and tips to help personalize your place.

Last year I took a good look at one of our main living spaces, our dining room and discovered a rather dreary and somewhat lifeless space. When we moved in we looked for what we already had or could possibly afford to decorate and never really revisited it like we thought we would.  Does this sound familiar?

If you are looking for thoughtful decorating tips designed to add visual square footage to your home then you’ll like appreciate How to Decorate Your Rental Home to Look and Feel Bigger from Rentals.com.

One tip mentioned in this article included:

Let there be light
Accentuate the natural light your rooms receive by using sheer window dressings that don’t sacrifice privacy. Mirrors can also amplify light. Enlarge your rental home instantly by placing one or more mirrors across from a bright window.

While the space isn’t all that small, I wanted more light and this mirror I found for about $40 at TJ Maxx fit the bill. I love the detail and it instantly added more light and dimension to the space.

I also wanted more color so I flanked the mirror with these wall scones from Pier One for around $30 each.  They are colorful but not over the top and work great with the room. They would also create some nice ambiance for a party or special evening. The $18 table runner from Target and $30 candle holder from Kohl’s really finish off the buffet. (You may ignore the white pom poms left over from a party. I just haven’t brought myself to take them down.)

With the article Home Decorating Basics, one great idea included:

Accessorize
You’d be amazed by how much a few simple items, when tied into a color or style theme, can impact the interior décor of your rental home. Think of inexpensive additions like curtains, area rugs, pillows, bed coverings and posters and get your imagination working.

This was another wall in our dining room before an update. While I still loved our family picture and the shelves themselves, I felt the assessories were too small and were lacking color and height for the space.

With some very inexpensive but colorful vases and flowers from Michael’s, I was able to transform this wall with some much needed height and color for less than $20. It doesn’t look cluttered and adds some personality to the space.

Now when I walk into our dining room I see a room that more accurately reflects our personality and style. It is more enjoyable to be in that space and it certainly makes me want to tackle more areas of our house that could use a makeover!

I really like the mirror idea. I would like to put a mirror over my fireplace which sits across from our glass sliding doors. We have a lot of windows but a small living room.
