Dyeing Easter eggs has been a tradition every year in my family as long as I can remember. Even when I was an adult and didn’t yet have kids we still always dyed eggs for the holiday and served them with Easter brunch. While we typically dye them at my mother’s house with extended family, this year we had the chance to try them out at home.
To start, I like vibrant eggs so we’ve always used Heinz vinegar to dissolve the color tablets. Just add three tables to the vinegar, drop a tablet in and watch it fizz and disappear before adding a 1/2 cup of water. I was surprised to see that the PAAS Classic Easter Egg Decorating Kit had a whopping 9 colors with which to use. My mom has always used coffee mugs but I happen to have the perfect size clear plastic cups and I loved seeing their bright colors light up the table!
The boys loved all the choices and picked out their favorite colors to start. Waiting for them to darken in the dye was half the fun!
With a regular table spoon, they were able to slowly drop their eggs in and move them around in the bright colors.
My husband even got in on the action with our newborn Wes and used the crayon included in the set to add faces and designs to a few of the eggs before coloring them.
They certainly turned out colorful! Also included in the set were ways to dress up the eggs further, including stickers. We decided to leave them this way so we wouldn’t cover them up. It worked great to serve with these easy orange rolls I baked up and got us excited for more colorful eggs on Sunday!
For even more egg decorating fun, check out the the new Egg Decorator app from Heinz & Paas available for the iPad. For every egg “dyed” on the app, they will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I only wish it worked for the iPod Touch so my boys could play with it too!
