What a great excuse for a play date! My daughter Nora invited her friends Lydia and Luke over to watch the new animated DVD series Little Angels. We received three titles, Little Angels 1-2-3’s, Little Angels ABC’s and Little Angels Animals. They teach learning skills through age appropriate Bible stories. The kids unanimously chose Little Angels Animals to watch together today.

Little Angels

Little Angels Animals was based around twins Alex and Zoe stuck in their room on a rainy day. It tied together a basic childhood life lesson and a Bible story. For example, the kids are struggling with an issue (being scared) and are magically transported back to Bible times in the midst of a Bible story (Jonah) where the main character is also learning about being scared. However the typical lesson learned during the Bible story is then discussed (obeying God). This continues throughout the movie. I liked how they split up the movie into several small stories so it kept the attention of a toddler.

They asked some debated Biblical questions from a child’s perspective. Was “the big fish” that swallowed Noah a whale? (The movie recognizes that some Bible interpretations call it a big fish and others call it a whale.) As they discussed this in the movie our kids chimed in with their opinions. “It was a whaaaale!”, “No no it was a shark!”, and “Shark Mommy!”

Little Angels

Our kids range in age from 2–3.5 years and were instantly captivated by the new movie (the peanut butter and jelly popcorn was an exciting treat as well). Each movie is approximately 30 minutes and kept the kids interested through one DVD. We attempted the ABC movie but they preferred to play with the Little Angels coloring/activity pages provided as a download with each DVD or free online (download them here for your kids!).

Overall I think these are great movies. I’m not sure kids fully understand the representation of angels painted on their ceiling coming to life to help them – versus the angels spoken of in the Bible (then again I doubt dancing vegetables make much sense either). However I think it’s a cute series and it does show that God provides us help in times of need. It is age appropriate for kids and toddlers alike (my daughter can’t stay captivated by Veggie Tales yet but stays focused on Little Angels and seems to interact and really know what’s going on).

Little Angels

We asked the kids about the movie and they could each recount the stories that they saw. They said that they’re favorite part of the movie was “the elephant noise”, “the whale”, and “the donkey noise”. There you have it!

TV’s favorite “angel”, Roma Downey says this about the animated DVD series for children (she offers also a great parents’ guide for each topic on these DVDs):

“For many years I had the privilege of playing an angel on television, bringing a message of God’s love to millions of Americans.  As a mother, I have longed to be part of a project that would help to bring that same message to children by not only teaching them the foundations of education – but also providing strong examples of good behavior.  Little Angels does just that.  It offers critical learning skills through the lens of timeless and age appropriate Bible stories. I only wish this series had been available when my kids were younger!” ~ Roma Downey

Little Angel DVDs retail for $14.98 and are available at major retailers nationwide. Look for them at a reduced rate and with free super saver shipping at Amazon! There is also a $3.00 off coupon for the series, which can be found on in the Home Entertainment section.
