One of our favorite ways to spend a family night together is by ordering pizza and enjoying a movie together. We had the chance to do that a few days ago with Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie. I had no idea what to expect as I hadn’t seen many trailers for it but my kids were thrilled and begging to watch it since it arrived at our house.
I thought I might find the black and white aspect of this film annoying since I love color but that wasn’t the case. It fit the movie and Tim Burton’s style well and after a few minutes in I didn’t even notice it anymore.
My boys absolutely loved every part of this movie that featured the beloved dog, Sparky. He is a lovable and very loyal friend to the main character, Victor. Because Victor is a young boy without a lot of friends, our hearts broke when an accident happens and Sparky dies. In the film, the boy is crying in his bed and my six year old exclaimed, “This part is so sad. I’m almost crying too!” But as the title suggest, that isn’t the end for Sparky. The rest of the movie has a ton of references to other horror films from Pet Cemetery to Dracula. And of course a plenty of them to Frankenstein.
What I would have assumed to be a creepy tale turned out to be a truly heartwarming story instead and one that had my kids laughing at Sparky’s antics. (A favorite was when his tail wags so hard it goes flying off.) The only thing we didn’t like was how freaky some of the characters looked with their very large eyes and small pupils.
If this title sounds familiar to you, it is actually a longer remake of Burton’s 1984 short film of the same name.
Synopsis:
From Disney and creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes the hilarious and offbeat “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town learn that getting a new ‘leash on life’ can be monstrous.
Complete with electrifying bonus features, “Frankenweenie” is alive with enchanting excitement in eye-popping Blu-ray 3D.
