Make Your Own Angry Bird Cupcake Picks {Craft Tutorial}

I’m not a crafty person. I openly admit that but sometimes you just have to put your craft hat on when you can’t find what you are looking for. That is exactly what happened to me with my son’s 5th birthday party. The theme was Angry Birds and while plenty of party supplies were available, the one thing I couldn’t find easily were cupcake picks. I could have paid a ridiculous amount for them from super crafty people off Etsy but it didn’t take too much thinking on my part to realize even my non-crafty self could whip some out without too much effort.

And I was right!

Make Your Own Cupcake Picks Angry Birds

I already had some elegant toothpicks with a rounded top on hand and I knew that they would work beautifully for the picks. Now I just needed two awesome rounded punches that were just the right size….

Except I couldn’t find two rounded punches in just the right size. Darn you Michael’s.  Grrr.

So with the party just a day away, out came a plan B. Which really was just cutting some squares that nested to create a layered look with some snazzy wavy scissors. (Do they have a real name? Because I threw the packaging away and I have no idea what to call these things.) I wanted circles but squares are much more forgiving. In fact, I decided not to measure the squares and just eyeball it so they were assorted sizes. This way, when they aren’t exactly the same I can claim it was on purpose.

Perfect.

Cupcake Pix Picks Angry Birds Make Your Own Armed with some colored card stock, Angry Bird stickers, glue, scotch tape and those sweet scissors, I set to work cutting out my shapes, gluing them together and fixing the sticker on the front. Then I simply attached the toothpick to the back with some tape. And…

viola! I made my very own Angry Bird cupcake toppers. While they were more work than buying some,  they were just what I needed in a pinch and very inexpensive. This would work great for any party theme and a great way to customize the look exactly how you want. This would be an extra easy project for anyone with an electronic cutting machine or the proper punches.

    Good ideas! I think since I just bought a home laminator ($17 on Amazon) I’d laminate them before putting them on the picks so they can be used again! Also, I might try to decorate both sides.

    That’s a really clever idea. I never would have thought to do this. I would have wasted money at the party supply shop. Love that it’s easier than decorating the top of the cupcakes. I’m not much of a Martha Stewart. LOL!
