Getting ready to have a baby can be stressful, especially as a first time parent.  So many things to decide that you might never have really thought to consider.

  • Will you have your baby in a hospital? A birthing center? At home?
  • Cloth or disposal diapers?
  • How do you feel about circumcision?
  • Will you co-sleep?
  • Are you going to try to breastfeed or use formula?

The decisions can be overwhelming and those are just a few,  not to mention all the unsolicited advice others offer. My favorite advice to offer any new mom is that every baby is different. There is no perfect solution for everyone and what works for one won’t work for another. The best thing you can do to put your mind at ease is do a little research and arm yourself with information so you can do what is best for you and your baby.

Trust your instincts.

And above all, know that no matter how hard it gets, this too shall pass!

I think a breast pump is a must-have for any breastfeeding mom.

One big decision I made early on in my pregnancy with my first was that I would try my hardest to breastfeed. Even though I was working full time outside the home, I was convinced that I could simply pump all the milk my son needed after my maternity leave was over.  While this was true, it wasn’t easy. Having a good electric pump is a must. A double pump is even better so you can cut your time in half.  I did this with my first two boys and I’m thankful that it worked for me.

Being home with my third has been fantastic, but getting time away even for just a few hours is nice for any mom. Just this past week I took a blog trip and while I was only gone 36 hours, I needed to bring a pump since I’m still breastfeeding. I was sent the NUK® Expressive® Double Electric Breast Pump to try out and so I brought that with me. It is designed to make breastfeeding easier for busy moms, offering everything needed to pump, store and feed!

The pump arrived the day before my trip so I didn’t have time to do anything with it but sterilize before I left. With only a quick glance at the instructions, I was able to intuitively figure out how to work the pump. I’m certain it helps that I’ve worked with several pumps but the overall design isn’t too complicated and the instructions are easy to follow.

Unlike other pumps I’ve owned, this one gives me control not over the speed at which it pumps but also the suction! This makes it easy to tailor it to my preferences and even lets me save my settings with the memory option. There are a whopping 32 custom settings for maximum comfort and speed. The pump unit also has an easy-grab handle & photo holder so you can look at your sweet baby as you express your milk.

Nuk Expressive Double Electric Pump 1One of my other favorite features is the larger black bag. It is discreet enough that doesn’t scream to the world that I’m carrying around a breast pump and it has plenty of room inside to carry more than just my pumping supplies.

I also really appreciated the small black cooler bag with ice pack which wraps around the expressed milk. This was perfect for travel and fit four bottles perfectly!Nuk Expressive Double Electric Pump 2

I liked being told to ignore everyone’s labor and delivery horror stories. I, in turn, encourage rather than scare, new moms.

Is there a must-have item on your list for any new mom?

Everyone gets a stuffed sheep. (I’m a knitter, I think everyone should have a sheep in their life..)

My best advice to a new mom is enjoy the process, don’t get caught up in being perfect because you will only disappoint yourself and not enjoy your time with your baby.

  4. Angela cisco says

The best product I received was the What to expect when expecting books. They still make a great gift for first time moms.

  5. Tanya White says

my babies had eczema and somebody told me to use Avenno lotion and it worked I will always use this lotion for their eczema.

As with most things- pay for quality where it matters- carseat, long lasting furniture, etc – safety has to come first.

  7. Secret Burkheiser says

Sleep when your baby sleeps, you will need the rest. My best advice is spoil them and love on them as often as you can, they grow up soo fast!

I’m still expecting to become a mother, so I can’t say anything that particularly applies to me regarding this question quiet yet… but I look forward to the day it does! :)

I didnt breast feed but the pup was a must have! I had mastitis and the pump was the only relief i would get from the clogged ducts… So a breast pump is a definite must have for any new mom!

I think the best advice is to cut yourself some slack. Things won’t be perfect but you’ll do your best and your baby will be fine. :)

I found the nursing pillow was wonderful to use helped take the fatigue off my arm wrist with carpal tunnel having developed after I had my son.

A must have is sleep! Whenever you can get it! even if it’s just a small nap, don’t pass it up.

  13. Carolyn Daley says

My favorite product advice is to research products and read reviews. When it comes to your child the number one priority should be safety and I believe it is important to effectively research products from car seats to cribs. As far as a good product, I recommend cloth diapers. Even if you are not a fan of cloth diapers they are good to have on hand for back up when you run out of the disposable ones.

My son was a collic baby so the best tip I was told/shown was the football hold. My son loved being held like that. He would fall asleep within a few hours at least lol
