Cinnamon Roll Flower: An Easy Breakfast Treat

Last weekend I decided it was time to treat the family to some cinnamon rolls, eggs and fresh fruit for breakfast. My kids get super excited about treats like cinnamon rolls, and I admit I like to cheat and just buy a can from Pillsbury. But I’ve also found that my kids really respond to foods that are served in a different way. It doesn’t take much effort to change how something is served, but presentation really goes a long way. Pretty dishes, fun garnishes, interesting shapes all work well. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to make a cinnamon roll flower. It is spring after all, but with our grass still looking brown and leaves on our trees non-existent, I like to remind myself in other ways.

Ingredients

  • 1 can 12.4 oz 8 ct. Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls
  • 1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips coconut or chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Grease cookie sheet.
  3. Place six rolls on cookie sheet in shape of flower, with one cinnamon roll in the middle and five surrounding it.
  4. Gently unroll one cinnamon roll for the stem.
  5. Cut one cinnamon roll in half for leaves.
  6. Bake for approximately 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Immediately transfer to serving platter, arranging in flower formation.
  8. Spread with icing and top center with mini chocolate chips, coconut or chopped nuts.
  9. Serve immediately.

These are the regular cinnamon rolls, not the Grands!, so they don’t bake up a lot. (You could easily substitute any type of canned cinnamon roll). If you don’t actually have any pieces of dough touching, they won’t bake into each other. I thought it would be easier to serve if the petals were separated and whole,  but you can definitely cut the rolls in half for petals or put them together to create a different look. I unrolled one cinnamon roll for the stem and cut another in half for leaves.

Keep in mind that I’ve altered the cook time and temperature. These rolls bake up much faster when they aren’t in a round cake pan for baking.

A few mini chocolate chips make for a perfect center, but chopped nuts or even coconut would also work. You could add more colorful garnishes on your platter with fruit like strawberries and blueberries. Play around with what you have on hand!
