Join Walmart and Pampers in Supporting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals + GIVEAWAY

Three years ago we lost triplets at twenty-two weeks. Three very much wanted and loved babies. They were each born weighing just over a pound and lived for three precious hours. That day changed me forever. Our hospital didn’t have the ability to care for a baby this small and we were offered only comfort care. Although I cherish the moments I had with my children without wires, tubes or monitors, I often still find myself wondering “what if” when I hear of other miracle stories of micro-premies surviving and doing well. We were given very little hope from our doctors. Thanks to amazing doctors at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals around the country, other families facing these devastating situations are given hope.

2014 IN Champion-RileyRiley

Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health
Premature Birth
Age 12 (as of 11/30/14)

Riley’s Story

Arriving three and a half months before her due date, Riley must have known she had important work to do in this world and was eager to get started.

Weighing a mere 1 pound 10 ounces, Riley’s future was uncertain from the beginning. Her parents had to wait an excruciating three weeks before they could hold their daughter for the first time. After heart surgery and 90 days in the neonatal intensive care unit, baby Riley was finally able to go home.

Today, Riley is living a full and healthy life. But she hasn’t forgotten the hospital that made it all possible — and even inspired her name. To show her appreciation, Riley has shared her story at 120 Dance Marathon events, inspiring local students to raise needed funds for her hospital, including support for the Ryan White Infectious Disease Center, pediatric cancer research and a program that helps relieve and prevent patient suffering. She loves giving other kids the chance to get better.

2014 MA Champion-MatthewMatthew

Boston Children’s Hospital
Micro-preemie, Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Stage 2 Kidney Disease
Age 6 (as of 11/30/14)

Matthew’s Story

The scars on Matthew’s torso tell stories of many medical procedures, but he doesn’t remember any of them. He knows he was born tiny, weighing slightly more than a pound, and that his twin brother went straight to heaven. When kids ask about the marks he takes it in stride, simply telling them his kidneys were very sick when he was born and are still recovering.

Most micro-preemies face developmental delays, but Matthew is lucky. He has advanced verbal skills, is reading way above grade level and stays busy writing musicals for his friends to perform.

Matthew and his family are eternally grateful for the expert medical care they continue to receive at Boston Children’s Hospital. During those first few weeks, his moms remember being inspired by other families facing daily challenges with grace. They often say, “If you want to forget your own troubles, go have lunch at the cafeteria of a children’s hospital.”

CMN Hospitals Funds in Action

CMN Hospitals funds provided Matthew with NICU services, child life specialists, respiratory therapists and the compassionate use of a study drug, most of which would not otherwise have been available.
