Thank you to Scholastic for sponsoring this post. All thoughts are my own.

My two oldest boys officially started school this week, marking the end of our Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. (Keep in mind the challenge goes until September 4th). Since my kids love to read, I didn’t have to encourage them too much to read over the summer. Regardless of whether your kids need a little push to read or not, The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge makes it fun for all!

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge Power Up and Read

If you aren’t familiar already, this challenge was created 9 years ago to stop the “summer slide” by encouraging kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out. Every year they introduce a new challenge theme and this year it is “Power Up & Read,” powered by ENERGIZER®.

Scholastic End of the Summer Fun

For the past few weeks my boys have been enjoying their last days of summer, including a trip to the zoo!   And of course we’ve gotten plenty of reading in. I’ve been making it a point to pick up new books for them secondhand to make it even more fun to read. I was able to use these as incentives for a job well done and offer a new one when boredom would set in. They loved it!

Five Word Book Reviews

Scholastic challenged us to review five favorite summer reads. The catch?  Each review can only be 5 words. It was a great way to find out what my kids really enjoyed reading this summer. (These reviews were entirely in their words)

Five Favorite Summer Reads for Boys

Lucian’s Picks (age 9)

Cleopatra in Space Book Two: The Theif and the Sword – Exciting twists and cliffhanger ending

The Invention of Hubo Cabret –  Very fascinating story with great pictures

Ship: The Epic Story of Maritime Adventure – Informative with cool different ships

Warren’s Picks (age 7)

Captain Underpants and the Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy Part 1: The Night of the Nasty Nostril Nuggets – Really funny and made me laugh!

Pokemon Save Those Mudkip – Very cute with little mudkips!

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Lucian chose two books that were not his usual choice of non-fiction. It is great to see him branching out.

Here are some great tips from Scholastic on how to keep your kids going and avoid brain drain before school starts!

  1. Scholastic has such great books. This looks like a great list. My son would enjoy the Captain Underpants book.
