Moon Dough Barn – Messy Yet Fun Molding Compound {Review}

Moon Dough is a new molding compound from Spin Master, the makers of Moon Sand. Moon Dough is different in that it never dries out so you can use it over and over again. It is super soft and very light, similar to marshmallows or cotton candy. Another bonus is it is hypo-allergenic wheat-free.

We had the chance to try out the Moon Dough Barn Set which retails for $19.99. It contains three packages of molding compound in blue, yellow and white, a fence and hay bale mold along with a barn which spits out a cow, pig, horse or chicken. (Some descriptions include a sheep and don’t include a chicken or horse. We definitely received a horse and chicken but not a sheep.) All the molds are in 3-D and can stand on its own!

Our Experience

Both of my boys, ages 4 and 2, had a blast with the barn. They loved turning the crank and watching an animal magically be spit out of the barn door. I found it was easier to help them a bit with filling the mold or else animals missing faces or looking rather deformed popped out because not enough compound was used. (Not that they really minded.)

I opened two of the bags of compound but quickly went with my usual Play-Doh instincts and put the blue away. It is very difficult to play with more than one color unless you are fine with the colors being blended together.  The compound itself has a very cool texture and is super light and fun to play with on its own.

The two molds created very detailed haystacks and fence. The amazing part with the fence is that they can be interlocked together to create a very long fence. Once my older son Lucian discovered the molds that was all he wanted to play with. I did have to take them out of the molds for him and didn’t find them all that easy to remove myself.

Final Thoughts

Overall my kids were thrilled with Moon Dough. It kept them entertained for well over an hour until we had to put it away for lunch. My boys asked to play with it again later that day and keep asking about it daily. The only problem? This set isn’t as mess free as the makers want it to appear. While it is less messy than Moon Sand (which my kids also frequently ask to play with) it isn’t any less messy than Play-Doh, except that it is at least dry and doesn’t stick as bad. But the crumbles were every where after playing and I had to vacuum up the dining room rug and wipe down my son’s booster seat. As you can see the blue ink ended up on the chair but it did come out after washing.

I’m happy that this set makes my boys so happy but I’m not as keen on the mess it creates. This will be something that I take out again to play with for sure and will probably buy more modeling compound but we’ll only pull it out when I am able to cope with the mess created.

Buy it:

Moon Dough is available at Amazon, Toys “R” Us, Target, Walmart, Kmart, A.C. Moore, Michaels and etoys. The barn set retails for $19.99 while smaller sets are $9.99 and $14.99. You can purchase Moon Dough refill packs for $4.99 for a double and $2.99 for a single.

Disclosure: I receive this item for review from Moon Dough through Team Mom. I was not monetarily compensated for this post and my opinion remains 100% my own.

Havaianas Flip Flops {Giveaway}

havaianas logo

Flip flops are a summer essential. Imagine going to the beach in your athletic shoes? (I’m sure there are people who do that but I’m not daring enough to try it!) Practical and easily rinsed off, flip flops are perfect for when you are feeling lazy . Bending over isn’t even required to put them on. Perfect right? Finding  bold patterns in which to show your own personal style make shopping for them even more fun. One shop that has a fabulous selection that is sure to appeal to your style whether you are looking for simple or vibrant is  Havaianas.

The birth of Havaianas began in 1962 and was patterned after the Zori, a traditional Japanese sandal which is why you’ll notice the signature rice pattern on all the soles of their flip flops. My favorite womens flip flops is the Fit style, which features a strap in the back and is available in six colors (shown in grey/silver below).  I love anything that gives me more support and appreciate the security of a back strap.

Havaianas WomensHavaianas also features footwear for the whole family including both mens and kids flip flops. I love that the baby styles include straps in the back so they stay put and can also be found in some adorable styles. How perfect would the USA version be for the 4th of July?

John Deere Earth Mover Action DVD {Review & Giveaway}

John Deere Earth Mover Action

My three year old is now a big fan of the new DVD,  John Deere Earth Mover Action from TM Book & Video. I knew it would be a hit since Lucian loves anything and everything that has a motor. With this new 40 minute John Deere DVD he can watch the real vehicles in action and learn even more about the vehicles. Since my father was a heavy equipment operator for the highway department growing up it was fun for me as an adult to see the equipment being used and have an appreciation for the skill required. This video is an in depth look at John Deere earth moving machines!

TM Books & Video’s crews scoured the country to find John Deere big machines working hard in interesting places – watch a grader plowing snow in the Rockies, excavators digging dirt and loading big articulated dump trucks, dozers climbing hills and pushing dirt, front-end loaders moving big rocks in a quarry – powerful, big-time earth-mover action that will thrill and delight young and old alike. Learn interesting facts about these mighty vehicles and play the “Let’s Pretend” game where young viewers imagine being the operator of an earth-moving machine.

You will also find fun songs by award-winning singer/songwriter James Coffey and shorter segments with die-cast toys mining  candy at the Big Rock Candy Mountain Quarry. Lucian loved this short segments and watching the vehicles work with marshmallows! If you have another John Deere Kids DVD, know that this DVD has all new, never seen before footage.

John Deere Earth Mover LucianI typically don’t include pictures of my children watching t.v. Can you blame me? That stare isn’t exactly flattering but I just couldn’t resist snapping a shot of Lucian holding on tightly to the DVD case as he watched the show!

Buy it: John Deere Earth, Mover Action retails for $14.95 and can be purchased directly from the TM Books & Video website or on Amazon with free super saver shipping..

Everything Spring Children’s Book {Spring Event Review & Giveaway #6}

Everything Spring CoverMy children have definitely noticed a change in the season. Suddenly it is no longer necessary to wear winter coats, we are outside so much more often and all of our snow is gone. They have loved the transition that spring has brought them so far and are very curious. National Geographic Kids has a new book entitled, Everything Spring that gives young children the perfect opportunity to learn more about the world around them in this time of rebirth!

In Jill Esbaum’s beautifully photographed picture book, young children can see, hear, and feel the warmth of springtime by reading and learning all about chicks, bunnies, and the other baby animals that come out to play in springtime. Surround yourself in Everything Spring. Stunning photography and detailed imagery capture the uplifting spirit of our favorite season in this counterpart to the National Geographic bestseller A Tree for All Seasons.

Everything Spring BookEverything Spring has become an instant favorite. Both my boys adored the animals and vivid imagery in this book. So much in fact that they were both kissing the baby animals and commenting on how cute the they were. How could you resist bunnies, fawns and ducklings?

My favorite part of this book, besides the obviously gorgeous photography, is way the author gives the reader an easy way to engage children. Within the story are auditory words such as Splish Splash!, PEEP, PEEP, PEEP and Plip-Plop-Plip as well as emphasis on certain words to make this a very interesting and fun read! I also like how changes in plants as well as animals are shown, including the metamorphosis of a tadpole into a frog. This creates the perfect opportunity to teach my children.

The recommend age range for this book is 4-8 but my two year old loves it just as much as my 3 1/2 year old. Since the story is 16 pages and doesn’t include more than a couple of lines on each page, it is the perfect length for his short attention span.

This is one book that I highly recommend and I will definitely look to get the other titles in the Picture the Seasons series. It is simply a delightful read.

BUY IT: Everything Spring retails for only $5.95 can be purchased from Amazon with free super saver shipping or from the National Geographic Store!

Guidecraft See, Store and Take-a-Long {Spring Event Review & Giveaway #1}

GDCRFTLOGO_Updated_WHT

Guidecraft began in 1964 as a small wood shop producing only 10 items and has since grown to include over 580 educational toys and furnishings. They take pride in providing top notch products and great customer service and are a favorite among educators for furnishing their classrooms.

One of my goals for spring was to reduce our clutter and organize my house to limit the amount of stress and chaos that creeps into my house. If there is one area that needed some major help it was our alcove. Right off our living room it serves as a great location for toys, especially since it has built in shelving. We were using bins within the shelves but they were overflowing with toys and dumping out their contents became a fun past time for both our young boys. These bins also made it hard to see what was inside and our shelving frankly had too much stuff in them to be efficient. (Another thing we need to work on…)

Guidecraft came to my rescue. When I was given the opportunity to choose an item from their site I was immediately drawn to the Moon and Stars See, Store and Take-a-Long.

Guidcraft See Store Take a LongBright and cheery, this wood storage solution features primary colors of red, blue and yellow and the sides contain cutouts of a moon and stars. It contains three shelves, with the bottom two holding a total of six medium sized bins that are included. Equipped with casters, the take-a-long can easily be moved around from room to room, hence the name.

Guidecraft Stars Moon See Store & Take-a-LongI had no idea just how much I would love the See, Store and Take-a-Long until my husband assembled it. I could tell immediately that pieces showed great workmanship. My husband commented many times on the overall quality from the wood to the paint. Our boys had fun helping and it only took about a half hour before it was completely assembled. It may have been quicker without their help but the instructions were easy to follow. One handy feature on the Guidecraft website is assembly instructions which are located right on the product page.Guidecraft Stars Moon See Store & Take-a-Long closeBesides thinking this system looks so much brighter and a bit bigger in person, I am just amazed at the sheer volume of toys that the entire system can hold. The bins are just the right size to hold smaller to medium toys and with six of them included it is no wonder it stores a lot. My favorite feature of all however is the locking mechanism on the side of the bins and the double handles included on the top. Because the bins lock on both sides my youngest son is unable to unlock the bins himself. This allows me control over the number of bins out at a time and limits the dumping to only one bin. Because of that we are quickly able to pick up the toys when we are finished with them without the extra step of sorting. And because there are handles my boys can easily move them around the house.

Guidecraft Stars Moon See Store & Take-a-Long LuCan you tell how proud my oldest is of his new storage system? He enjoyed the assembly and organizing and loves that all the shelves are easily accessible unlike our other book shelves.

The only downside I can even think of with this piece is that the bottom two shelves aren’t actually shelves so if you decided to do something different besides using bins you would be limited as to what you could store on the bottom.

Now that I’ve experienced the quality firsthand, there is no doubt in my mind that I will look to this company again in the future. I truly couldn’t be more thrilled.

If getting organized makes you go gaga like me, you simply must consider all the wonderful solutions Guidecraft has to offer. Highlighted below are just a few of the other pieces within the Moon and Stars collection with prices starting at only $55. There are also many other neutral options such as the Mission Collection or other fun themes such as the Butterfly Collection or Safari Collection if this one doesn’t fit with your decor.

Healthy Easter Basket Treats

We all know with certain holidays comes the over abundance of candy.  Easter (along with Halloween) is one of the most notorious for causing a whole lot of sugar overload for kids.  And yet how could we possibly fill an Easter basket with goodies and not include traditional Easter candy?

Here are just a few great options that are actually healthy and can limit the sugar shock.

Annie's Homegrown Organic Logo

Annie’s Homegrownhas a huge selection of organic and natural foods and snacks, most of which feature their adorable bunny. The bonus is they contain no additives, preservatives or nasty high fructose corn syrup. I just discovered them last week at my local Target on a price cut. You can find them in the snack sections very low (almost hidden) on the shelf. I got the Bunny Graham Friends and Bunny Graham Honey for only $2 for a 7oz box. My family loves them!

Annie's Homgrown Snack optionsLeave them in their cute box or add them to a poly bag with ribbon and you’ve got an adorable Easter basket snack. Healthy and yet your kids won’t know the difference!

Buy it: You can purchase these at Target, Costco, Amazonor use their store locator to find a location near you!

Peter Rabbit Organics LogoI know I mentioned this on a giveaway post recently but it certainly worth mentioning again. Peter Rabbit Organics fruit pouches would look absolutely adorable in an Easter basket and my boys consider it a rare treat and more exciting than candy. (Seriously!)

Peter Rabbit Organics 100% Pure Fruit Snacks contain a full serving of organic fruit with no added sugar or artificial ingredients. This a healthy and delicious snack perfect for babies and children and would be a great alternative to candy in an Easter basket.

Peter Rabbit Organics - family shot

Buy it: These fruit pouches can currently be purchased for around $15 for a case of 10 from Amazon or check their store locator to find the nearest location near you.

Archer Farms Logo

Being a huge fan and very regular shopper of Target, it is no surprise that we are familiar with the Archer Farms brand. Two of our favorite products are the organic real fruit strips and real fruit bars. My boys love them so always have them on hand as a quick snack on the go.  Since they come in many great flavors and are individually packaged, you can easily divide them up among multiple baskets to give each child a variety!

Archer Farms Fruit Bars and strips

Buy it: Archer Farms fruit strips and fruit bars can be purchased for $2.99 (regular price) at Target. The fruit strips come in a 10 count box and the fruit bars in a 6 count box.

Disclosure: This is not a paid post. I received samples for the purpose of the original review last year for Peter Rabbit Organics only and this did not influence me or persuade me to write this post. I only wanted to provide you with some healthy snack options that I have personally tried. The opinions and experiences I’ve shared with these products are my own and yours may differ.

Top 10 Reasons a Public Restroom is Not Kid Friendly

Restroom Sign

Visiting a public bathroom has never been my idea of fun. Now that I usually have two young kids in tow when I do visit the restroom, I have come to realize one thing.  Clueless men and women without children are designing many of the public restrooms I frequent.  This must be true as no mother in their right mind would equip bathrooms would certain features if they had young kids.

Top 10 Reasons A Public Bathroom is Not Kid Friendly

1. Stall doors with an actual door handle and an easy unlock feature. Turn the handle once and the door is instantly opened.

Try going to the bathroom with a 3 year old and an almost two year old. Invariably one of them (usually the youngest) will want to pull on the door handle which in turns opens the door. This is not good when I’m in midstream with my pants still down and a woman waiting on the other side. This just happened to me last week.

2. Stalls with very short partitions.

Do not give my kids any extra incentive to sneak a peek under the stall or even worse, try to escape while I’m indisposed and can’t chase after them.

3. Loud and overly sensitive automatic flushing systems

Don’t get me wrong. Anything that keeps my kids from touching that horrendous handle on the old style toilets is great. I like to flush those with my foot and it is comical to watch my oldest try to mimic this action. But there is no reason that the automatic flush needs to be freakishly loud or go off when they are still using the toilet and scare the bejesus out of them.

4. Sinks which are too high for a child to reach the water. (I don’t even mean the faucet handle, I mean the stream of water itself.)

5. Soap which is in an awkward position and hard to dispense.

6. No step stool for kids to stand on.

Because of number 4, 5 and 6 I am invariably lifting one of my kids up with one hand while trying to push the button for soap with the thumb of my free cupped hand and catch it just so I can give some to my kiddo. I then have to hold my kid over the sink while he slowly washes then takes forever to rinse his hands. Never fails that they he wants to touch the bubbles that have formed at the base of the sink and I’m stuck rinsing them yet again. While I’m busy with my oldest it is a prime opportunity for youngest to get into trouble.

7. Hand dryers are the only available option.

While I realize that this is meant to be earth friendly, try getting two squirmy kids to wait long enough under a dryer to actually dry their hands. (Not that I can blame them, these drive me nuts too.) Hand dryers are also scary for some kids. My three year old honestly asks to dry his hands on my pants. Hmm…I wonder where he got that idea from? Paper towels are quick and easy and I get to leave the bathroom with dry pants.

8. Hand dryers which are too high.

Even though my youngest enjoys having his hands under the dryer, unless I pick him up he is getting a full blown blast of hot air into his face. If it is automatic and only turns on when his hands are underneath it is constantly turning on and off as he isn’t consistently holding his hands in the proper spot.

9. Diaper changing station out in the open.

I love it when these are located within a stall. While you may have to wait until that stall becomes free, you get to change you child with a little privacy. Most other bathroom guests I would assume do not really enjoy looking at your child’s poop smeared butt. As a mom who is occasionally stuck doing this I hate the feeling of all eyes on me as I change my son’s diaper.

10. Swinging doors.

Seriously what are some people thinking? That is just a recipe for disaster with a young kid who is attracted like a magnet to a door that swings open. Either it knocks back into him or he gets whacked as someone is coming into the restroom.  While I appreciate not having to touch a door handle and the nasty germs it collects,  it definitely isn’t kid friendly.

Who passes and fails this test for me locally?

FAILS MISERABLY: McDonald’s

Ironically it is my local McDonald’s that was the inspiration for this post. While the bathrooms are very new and you would assume kid friendly, I am driven insane every time I’m forced to use them. My McDonald’s violates more than half of the complaints listed above.

PASSES AS THE MOST KID FRIENDLY BATHROOM I’VE ENCOUNTERED: Barnes & Noble.

They have a small step stool available along with paper towels easily in reach next to the sink. There is even a diaper changing station and diaper genie located in their handicap accessible stall. It is the only bathroom I’ve been in that included a step stool and now I find every bathroom that doesn’t have it lacking. Since we attend a weekly story time and use the bathroom with each visit, I certainly appreciate these small conveniences.

Now it is your chance to spill. Anything in particular drive you nuts when you visit a public restroom with kids?

Eeeewwww…icky.

If your toddler suddenly says, “Eeeeewwww…icky” and then looks up at you with his big brown eyes and his hands out before you with a sticky brown substance, you know it might be time to grab the camera.

January 20 2010 007

January 20 2010 010

January 20 2010 009

I can think of  a couple of bright spots in my son’s diaper diving incident.

1.  He thought it was icky and therefore:

  • He told me about it right away.
  • He didn’t touch anything.
  • He didn’t eat it and I’m really thankful about that!

2. This makes for a good story because:

  • I can tease him about this later in life.
  • I took pictures and can share with future girlfriends.
  • I get to blog it.
  • It causes me to scratch my head in wonder at all the issues lately with Warren and poop. (see here)

Our Five Favorite Holiday Activities with the Kids!

Lucian Christmas 2008

1. Visit our local festival of lights. It is truly an amazing display and I’m hoping this year will be a little warmer so the kids can handle it! The past couple of years have been brutally cold during December.

2. Decorate our tree together. We like to do this the week after Thanksgiving. I’m excited that both our boys can participate this year!

3. Bake and decorate cookies together. Yummy. This is such a fun activity with great rewards at the end! (We get to eat the cookies of course!)

4. Pick out Christmas presents with each child for Daddy and for their brother. This is a special, quality time and I look forward to seeing what they pick out!

5. See Santa. Amazingly my kids are not afraid so we enjoy this!

Kidorable ~ It’s in the Bag! {Review & Giveaway #3}

I’m excited to bring to show you some wonderful items from Kidorable, a company that specializes in kids apparel and accessories that takes function and adds an imaginative and fun twist! They started as a small company in 1997 and have since grown faster than they ever imagined themselves! If you browse their styles you just can’t help but smile yourself so it really is no wonder they have so much appeal to children.

We got to try test out the fireman umbrella, boots and backpack. My three year old Lucian immediately gravitated to all of these items since he is currently obsessed with any type of emergency vehicles and firemen in general. He wasted no time putting on his boots and backpack so I took him outside to let him also enjoy his umbrella. He had fun identifying the images on the umbrella and was exited about the fire hydrant and ladder!

October 7, 2009 018 Lucian loves that the boots have wheels and flames going up them and even his little brother steals them whenever he gets the chance so he can clomp around the house in them! The fireman backpack has also been a hit with my son. He thinks it is so cool and it has been great to use for his weekly Early Childhood Education class for spare clothes. It certainly stands out among the rest of the bags! I like that there are outside pouches, perfect for small toys or snacks.

October 7, 2009 027The quality on all of these items is superb and as a parent I am very pleased. The only thing I should warn you about is the smell that comes from the backpack. It reminds me of the strong rubber smell I’ve gotten from other items with similar materials, like my yoga mat. You will definitely want to air it out before using. I don’t notice any smell now but it was a bit strong in the beginning. I wouldn’t however let it keep me from purchasing a backpack in the future, especially when the are so adorable.

How can you even resist this Ladybug Backpack or

Kidorable Lady Bugthis Frog Backpack?

Kidorable Frog

Now we just need a rain coat to match! If you are looking for an entire set, Kidorable has plenty to choose from, including this brand new Lucky Cat style for all you little ladies!
