HABA is a company from Germany (oh yea!) that started in 1938.  HABA was the “Factory for fine wooden toys” and is now known around the globe.

We are a wood manufacturing company known for our high-quality baby and children’s toys, as well as our children’s games and furniture. We view ourselves as a “single source supplier” for children. We are expanding our product portfolio beyond wood products using the same high quality standards for which we are known. Thus, HABA also offers jewelry, porcelain dishes and textiles, for example. HABA products may be found in well-stocked toy stores around the globe.

Being of German descent myself and further studying the language and culture during the last 9 years, I know how serious Germans are about quality. HABA is no exception to this high consideration. “Produkt gut, Alles gut” Check out their website to really get into how great their policies, philosophies, environmental protection, and quality and safety really are! One concern I have always had being a mother is making sure my daughter has quality toys…enough of these lead paint, plastic and cheaply made toys! We have always been partial to wood and quality made products.

Meet Fay Finja, Souri, Lotta, Amelie and Paola – each 15” of sweet smiles and outstretched arms. HABA’s soft doll collection features a padded body, chenille hair, cotton/polyester and velour dresses. Each doll is dressed in happy colors of the rainbow and carries an accessory that makes them special from a flower basket to a headband. And just in case, each doll is hand washable (but keep them away from the dryer).

I received the Fee Finja doll for review. She is everything I have ever looked for and more than I could hope for. She is made out of REAL textiles and the quality is sure one of the first things I noticed.

I was greatly impressed with how much detail went into the doll. From the hair being chenille yarn-like to the removable shoes exposing the fabric matching her dress, I couldn’t help myself from examining every thoughtful aspect to this Fee Finja. Fee Finja came also with a blue shawl that can go on and off. Also with a basket of flowers that is also detachable with little fabric flowers.

My daughter was incredibly excited to receive her…in fact to go with the great picture I captured she exclaimed “OHHHH, I’ve ALWAYS wanted one of these!” As if she has no other dolls…ha!…but even she could tell its different than her other dolls – this one is a Forest Fairy wanting her playmates to come with her protecting the forest! I seriously could not get this doll out of the arms of my daughter after she opened it up! I think it was painful for her to have me take the one or two pictures of just Fee Finja alone…with out being in her arms.

The dolls are culturally diverse, which is a defiantly a positive. One downfall I see is that they could be considered costly but you get what you pay for, especially in this case for a fantastic quality and environmentally aware product. I think we may even add to our (now) started collection and buy more of the sisters and friends…they seriously are really amazing dolls.

HABA has many different small and large dolls and accessories such as prams, a buggy and carry cot to collect including little sister type dolls  along with horses.

With the concerns about the chemicals used in textiles and toys surfacing in the last several years,  it is no wonder that the movement towards organic has begun. However, finding organic products that are both pure and actually beautiful is no easy task.  Eden Home is a great resource for discovering perfectly natural, eco-friendly products for your home and life. When our toys first arrived the packaging certainly grabbed my attention. It made it all that more exciting to open and made a fabulous presentation. I love the Dumping Mud Organic Kids Toys gift set for my three year old son Lucian. Lucian loves these vehicles! The are small enough to easily transport, are light and best of all having moving parts! Don’t they look like fun? Of course he loved the organic panda bears. They are super flavorful and I actually liked them better than a typical gummy bear.

I chose the BPA Free Dish Set from Green Toys for Warren because he loves to pour and drink from cups and I realized the wood dishes set we already had didn’t include cups. I also knew he’d love to have more dishes with which to make me breakfast, lunch and dinner so I opted for this set.

As you can see it is certainly a hit! The set is very durable and the quality is fantastic. This set comes with a table setting for four. They are light, colorful and best of all are also made from 100% recycled milk containers. My two year old cooks for me all the time with this set and it is perfect for creative, open ended play!

iPlay is just one of the many brands of International Playthings, a leader in award winning toys for children. The Chubbies Bucket Set below is a favorite of my son Lucian’s at his ECFE (Early Childhoold Family Education) class. My 26 month old Warren love shapes sorters so I knew he’d enjoy the Poppin Shapes Aquarium. He really liked the pop out feature on each of the adorable sea shapes and that even grabbed the attention of my 3 1/2 year old. Warren had fun putting them in and out and liked to carry the entire aquarium around the house.

He did however have some difficulty with the front of the aquarium. Sometimes he found it tough to open and close and needed my help. I feel the shapes have a slightly higher quality than the actual aquarium itself but even so, it is a toy my son certainly enjoys.

This toy is recommended for ages two and up, although honestly, I’m not exactly sure why. With its chunky pieces, a younger child would enjoy this as even the picture with the baby above suggests.

The Land of Nod is the type of online shop that I can loose myself in. The kind of shop that makes searching for gifts for my children a breeze and the hardest part simply narrowing down the selection. We had the opportunity to experience the quality of Shure products with this Chunky World Construction Puzzle which retails for $19.99. Besides being a fun construction theme (sure to win my 3 year old’s Bob the Builder & Might Machines loving heart), the puzzle is also colorful and bright.

A favorite feature of mine is the double sided, chunky wooden pieces. The solid wood pieces are 1/2″ inch thick, laminated and oh so smooth. The fact that the image is on both sides adds an entirely new diminsion to my 3 year old’s play. He is already very good at puzzles and I wondered how much of a challenge this puzzle would be, even though the suggested age was 3+. Because it is double sided if the piece is facing the wrong way he must flip it around which increases the difficulty. My son also likes that he can play with the pieces themselves as they do stand alone.

Of course when my older son gets a puzzle, his 21 month old brother immediately wants to get in on the action as well. With the matching artwork underneath each puzzle piece and the sheer size of the pieces, he can easily put this one together, assuming that all the pieces are facing the correct way. If they are wrong, he does get frustrated. His older brother helps him out when this happens and since the puzzle is so large, they can easily work together. I couldn’t ask for a better puzzle and I’m thrilled that this is something they can enjoy at the same time.

We had the opportunity to try out one of their Shadow Books, Camping Out which retails for $15. Other titles include Time for Bed and Forest Fairies.  These books add a new dimension to story telling. With the small flashlight (included), cutout scenes and back drop you can create shadow scenes seamlessly with your story telling.  Everyday images are used to show that while shadows can look scary, they aren’t to be feared.I had a lot of fun turning off our hallway lights and sitting down with both of my boys to read the story. With 26 pages, these stories are longer and perfect for the attention span of my three year old Lucian, although not so much for my 21 month old, Warren. He got distracted easily and wanted to play with the images versus sitting back and listening to the story unfold. I love this overall concept of not only teaching that shadows are nothing to be afraid of, but also having a new and exciting way to tell a story. Lucian loved holding the flashlight so this a unique way to get your children involved as well.

My only complaint is that sometimes the die cut pages move/fall down. It is critical that you are on a flat surface or else the pages and sides of the backdrop aren’t very stable. I would recommend using the floor or a table in which to tell your story.

Here is just a short reading of Camping Out to give you a feel for how the shadows look.

Lucian was so excited when this arrived and immediately started to play with them in a traditional way. I heard lots of self made siren sounds and saw a lot of pushing the vehicles around.  Once he realized he could take them apart, mix and match the bases and and stack them back together it added a whole new dimension to his play. There are three to four wooden pieces per vehicle so while it is a puzzle, it isn’t one so difficult that he can’t put together. And of course it is wood so that is always a hit with me!
